WHY NJU

NJU’s Firsts


Tracing its roots to 1902, NJU has grown and evolved for over 120 years, passing many milestones and forging a strong sense of public responsibility and a pioneering spirit along the way.

NJU is the first higher learning institution in China to:

recruit female students in 1920, and advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment through high education. Many female figures grew up or pursued careers at NJU, such as Chien-Shiung Wu (studying, 1930 to 1934), Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (teaching, 1920-1933);

establish faculties of art, gymnastics, biology, psychology, business management, etc. in 1910s and 1920s.

found modern laboratories in physics, chemistry, etc. in 1920s;

award doctoral degrees in such fields as Chinese studies, world history, and computer science after the establishment of PRC;

establish an joint international education institution after China’s reform and opening up, the Johns Hopkins-University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies, together in conjunction with Johns Hopkins University
